Is Your Child Getting the Education They Deserve?

As the parent of a child with a disability, attorney Dan Robinson of Dan Robinson Law, P.C. understands well what parents like him are going through. If your child isn’t getting the education services they are entitled to by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), we can help you fight to gain opportunities for your child that the law provides for them.

We care deeply about this issue and strive to support parents and guardians when it comes to overcoming obstacles to a child’s education.

If you are experiencing difficulty or pushback in trying to assert your child’s right to special education services, reach out to us for assistance. What is a Special Education Attorney?

A special education attorney is a legal professional who represents you in a dispute with a school.

Our Ventura special education attorney can help you:

  • Negotiate with the school on your behalf
  • Write letters to the school on your behalf (or help you write them)
  • Review your child’s IEP or 504 plan
  • Attend IEP or 504 plan meetings
  • Give you information about your child’s rights
  • Advise you on strategy for working with the school
  • Recommend specialists, service providers, evaluators, and school

Does Your Child Need an IEP?

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written education plan that’s unique to your child with a disability if they are enrolled in a public school. An IEP outlines measurable goals that your child can reasonably accomplish in one year. These goals are crafted by taking into account your child’s strengths, areas for improvement, and – of course – how the plan can be enacted to accommodate your child’s special education.

IEPs are drafted by a team that also reviews them on an annual basis to ensure that the special education program developed for a child is working.

This team consists of the following individuals:

  • Parents or guardians (you)
  • General education teachers
  • Special education teachers
  • Your child (in some cases and when appropriate)
  • A representative who understands special education services and has the authority to commit them for your child’s benefit
  • Anyone you invite who has special expertise or knowledge about your child (such as a doctor or social worker)
  • Someone who can interpret your child’s results on evaluations

Why You Should Hire A Special Education Attorney

You should consult an attorney if you have experienced any of the following:

  • Unable to reach an agreement at the IEP meeting
  • The school district brings an attorney
  • Your child is not making appropriate progress
  • The school district has filed a special education complaint against you
  • You need to appeal an administrative special education decision or order
  • You wish to file a complaint against the school district
  • If you believe your child is being discriminated against
